What is a haldi?

Haldi in Hindu weddings and maiyan (or vatna) in Punjabi Sikh weddings are the ceremonies where family members apply a turmeric paste to the bride or groom before the wedding, for blessings and a glow on the day. They are usually relaxed, daytime and full of yellow.

Most happen at home or in a garden. We help with the parts that make them feel special: yellow and marigold decor, folk singers, a dhol to finish, and photographers and videographers to capture the colour.

Where it works best

  • Step 1

Yellow and marigold decor with a seat for the bride or groom

  • Step 2

Folk songs while the family take turns

  • Step 3

Dhol to lift things once the ceremony is done

  • Step 4

A photographer and videographer for the close-ups

Tips from our team

  1. 1

    Dress for mess

Turmeric stains. Old clothes in yellow for family, and covers for floors and furniture.

  2. 2

    Shoot in daylight

Haldi photos look best outdoors or by a big window. Plan the timing with your photographer.

  3. 3

    Keep it short and fun

A focused hour of ceremony, songs and dhol keeps energy high before a busy wedding week.

Frequently asked questions

Which venues near London can hold a large Asian wedding?

On our list, Grand Connaught Rooms (up to 500 guests) and The Londoner Leicester Square (up to 400 guests) can take 400 or more guests. Tell us your venue and numbers and we will plan haldi entertainment around the space.

Do venues around London have sound limits for dhol or music?

Many hotels and country houses set a sound limit or an end time, and some ask for unplugged dhol indoors. Tell us your venue when you enquire and we will check its rules before we confirm anything.

Which postcodes around London do you cover?

All of E1, E1W, N1, NW1, SE1, SW1A, SW1E, SW1H, SW1P, SW1V, SW1W, SW1X, SW1Y, W1A, W1B, W1C, W1D, W1F, W1G, W1H, W1J, W1K, W1S, W1T, W1U and W1W, including Westminster, Mayfair, Kensington, City of London, Southwark and Camden, plus the rest of Central London and nearby Borehamwood, Epsom, Loughton and Potters Bar.

They are very similar. Haldi is the term used in many Hindu weddings and maiyan or vatna in Punjabi Sikh weddings. Both involve applying a turmeric paste with blessings from family.

Can you decorate a home for a haldi?

Yes. Our decor partners can dress a living room, garden or marquee with drapes, flowers and a seat for the ceremony.
