What is a Jago?

The jago (or jaggo) is the Punjabi pre-wedding night when the nanke, the bride or groom's mother's family, carry a decorated gagar lit with diyas through the street, singing boliyan and dancing to the dhol. It is noisy, joyful and usually goes on late.

Many families now hold the jago at home, in a marquee or in a hired hall, often on the same night as the mehndi. We put together the parts that make it: dhol players to lead the walk, folk singers for boliyan, giddha and bhangra dancers to get everyone moving, and a DJ to carry the party on.

Where it works best

  • Step 1

Dhol players to lead the jago walk with the gagar

  • Step 2

Folk singers for boliyan and traditional songs

  • Step 3

Giddha dancers, then bhangra dancers to bring the family onto the floor

  • Step 4

A DJ for the rest of the night

  • Step 5

Decor for the jago space: drapes, lights and a photo corner

Tips from our team

  1. 1

Plan the walk with neighbours in mind

A jago walk is loud. Agree the route and timing, and let neighbours know, especially for late starts at home.

  2. 2

    Give the nanke the spotlight

The gagar walk is their moment. Have the dhol meet them at the door so the entrance feels like an occasion.

  3. 3

    Keep boliyan live

Folk singers and a dholki turn boliyan into a call and response the whole family joins in.

Frequently asked questions

Which venues near Sutton Coldfield can hold a large Asian wedding?

On our list, Eastside Rooms (up to 1200 guests), The New Bingley Hall (up to 1200 guests), Dome Corporation (up to 900 guests) and Sapphire Suite & Events (up to 800 guests) can take 400 or more guests. Tell us your venue and numbers and we will plan Jago entertainment around the space.

Do venues around Sutton Coldfield have sound limits for dhol or music?

Many hotels and country houses set a sound limit or an end time, and some ask for unplugged dhol indoors. Tell us your venue when you enquire and we will check its rules before we confirm anything.

Which postcodes around Sutton Coldfield do you cover?

All of B23, B24, B35, B36, B44, B72, B73, B74, B75 and B76, including Birmingham, Royal Sutton Coldfield, Streetly, Little Aston and Curdworth, plus the rest of West Midlands and nearby Handsworth, Birmingham, Walsall and Smethwick.

What happens at a jago?

The maternal family arrive carrying a decorated pot (gagar) lit with diyas, singing boliyan, and the night turns into dancing with dhol, giddha and bhangra. Traditions vary between families, so tell us how yours does it.

Can we hold a jago at home?

Yes, many families do. Dhol outside can be loud, so we talk through timings and the route for the walk with you.

Can the jago and mehndi be on the same night?

Yes, it is common. We plan one line-up that covers both, for example folk singing while the henna goes on, then the jago walk and dancing.

Still have questions?

Tell us about your event and we'll come back with options.
