What is a sangeet?

The sangeet is a pre-wedding music night, traditionally part of North Indian weddings, where both families perform songs and choreographed dances for the couple. Today it is often a full production with a stage, lighting, a host and professional performers.

We supply what turns a sangeet into a show: a stage and AV, a host or compere, live singers or a Bollywood band, professional dancers to open and close the night, and a DJ for the party.

Where it works best

  • Step 1

A host to run the order of performances

  • Step 2

An opening routine from professional Bollywood dancers

  • Step 3

Family performances with stage lighting and sound

  • Step 4

Live singers or a Bollywood band

  • Step 5

Dhol and a DJ to finish with a party

Tips from our team

  1. 1

    Write a running order

List every family performance with its track and length, and share it with the host and DJ a week before.

  2. 2

    Rehearse on the stage

If the venue allows, run each routine once on the stage before guests arrive.

  3. 3

End with everyone on the floor

Finish the performances with a group dance or a dhol set so the party starts straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Do venues around Edinburgh have sound limits for dhol or music?

Many hotels and country houses set a sound limit or an end time, and some ask for unplugged dhol indoors. Tell us your venue when you enquire and we will check its rules before we confirm anything.

Which postcodes around Edinburgh do you cover?

All of EH1, EH2, EH3, EH4, EH5, EH6, EH7, EH8, EH9, EH10, EH11, EH12, EH13, EH14, EH16 and EH17, plus the rest of Edinburgh and nearby Musselburgh, Penicuik, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

What is the difference between a sangeet and a mehndi?

The mehndi is centred on the henna, the sangeet on music and dance performances. Many families combine them into one night.

Can you provide a host for the sangeet?

Yes. A host or compere keeps the performances on time and the room engaged.
