What is a Vaisakhi?

Vaisakhi marks the Punjabi harvest and, for Sikhs, the founding of the Khalsa in 1699. In the UK it is celebrated with nagar kirtans, melas, community events and parties.

For melas, community stages and company celebrations we supply dhol players, bhangra and giddha dancers, Punjabi singers, DJs, staging and turban tying stalls. Religious processions follow the gurdwara's own arrangements.

Where it works best

  • Step 1

Dhol players to open the event

  • Step 2

    A bhangra and giddha performance

  • Step 3

A turban tying stall for guests

  • Step 4

A Punjabi singer or DJ to keep it going

Tips from our team

  1. 1

    Make it hands-on

Turban tying and a quick bhangra lesson give guests something to take part in, not just watch.

  2. 2

    Plan for outdoors

Spring weather is unpredictable. Agree a covered area for performers and sound.

  3. 3

    Book early for April weekends

Dhol and bhangra teams are in demand around Vaisakhi.

On our list, Rainton Meadows Arena (up to 1500 guests), Newcastle Marriott Hotel Gosforth Park (up to 600 guests) and Newcastle Marriott Hotel MetroCentre (up to 400 guests) can take 400 or more guests. Tell us your venue and numbers and we will plan Vaisakhi entertainment around the space.

Do venues around Gateshead have sound limits for dhol or music?

Many hotels and country houses set a sound limit or an end time, and some ask for unplugged dhol indoors. Tell us your venue when you enquire and we will check its rules before we confirm anything.

Which postcodes around Gateshead do you cover?

All of DH3, NE9, NE10, NE28, NE31, NE37 and NE38, including Wallsend, Springwell, Birtley, Chester-le-Street, Great Lumley and County Durham, plus the rest of Tyne and Wear and nearby Newcastle upon Tyne, South Shields, Sunderland and Cramlington.

When is Vaisakhi?

Vaisakhi falls on 13 or 14 April, and UK events often run on the weekends around it.

Can you run a turban tying stall?

Yes. Turban tying is popular at Vaisakhi events and gives guests a hands-on part of the celebration.
